Driving Habits to Avoid This Winter

Winter Driving Safety Tips

Winter is in full swing in Connecticut. This means that you need to be more cautious on the roads and change a few of your driving habits. Of all the seasons, winter requires the most care and preparation if you are to stay safe, avoid accidents, and prevent a breakdown. Without even realizing it, you could be driving recklessly. Below are common driving habits that could be dangerous, especially in winter time. Mistake #1: Not getting the vehicle ready. From renewing bald tires to defrosting the screen, many motorists don’t prepare their vehicle for the harsh winter road conditions. Winter driving demands the highest level of concentration due to high winds, rain, fog, snow, and ice. Ensure that your vehicle is ready for the roads by giving it a full service and checking the tires, brakes, and engine fluids. Give yourself an extra ten minutes to get to where you need to be by defrosting the vehicle and ensuring that you can see out of all of the windows.  Mistake #2: Speeding Many motorists tend to drive in winter as they do in summer. Unfortunately, the wet or icy roads can be a hazard, especially when it comes to stopping. The dark mornings, crossing pedestrians, and road surface conditions require motorists to slow down.  Mistake #3: Not leaving enough room You never want to get too close to another car, especially when bad weather conditions limit how much control you have over your own vehicle. Keeping a safe distance between you and vehicle in front will lessen the odds that you’ll end up crashing into one another. Remember to leave a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front. At least two seconds, which should be doubled in rain and increased ten-fold in snow or icy conditions.
