Don’t Drive Distracted
Alongside driving drunk, driving distracted is a giant risk factor for getting involved in a car accident. To avoid a pedestrian collision, work to prevent distractions. Don’t go on your phone, fiddle with the radio, or daydream while behind the wheel. The best way to drive is to be alert and aware of your surroundings.
Use Your Turn Signals
The controls are right there – so use them! It takes no more than a flick of the wrist to turn them on. Pedestrians look for those signals just as much as your fellow drivers do. These people rely on them to know your intentions and when it is safe to go.
Look Both Ways
Your parents taught you this habit for good reason. Even if you’re turning onto a one-way street, it’s important to look both ways before you hit the gas. Doing so will ensure that you see pedestrians approaching from either direction.
Slow Down
If you’re driving in an area with crosswalks that aren’t traffic-light-controlled, not only will you want to be more aware of pedestrians stepping out in front of you, but you’ll want to slow down. This gives you a chance to see pedestrians who want to cross the road.
