Motorcycle Safety Month & You

May is Motorcycle Safety Month, so use these tips to keep you safe on the road.

Motorcycles are unlike any other vehicle out there because you are not enclosed by a steel cage: it feels like there's nothing, it's just you and the road. The feeling is just amazing, but to gain something one must often lose something. In this case, it's losing some–if not all–of your safety. Because you're not trapped in your car's metal frame, there's nothing to absorb the force of another vehicle colliding with you and there's really nothing (but the leather of your jacket) to take some of the friction when you hit pavement. This is what makes motorcycles so dangerous and why you must make sure to be safe, and even more so during May–Motorcycle Awareness Month. Here are some tips you can use to keep you safe while you ride your motorcycle. 1. Wear a Helmet Your cranium may be pretty solid, but it's not going to hold up when you're going upwards of 70 miles per hour and it meets solid concrete. Using a DOT certified helmet is important to keep you safe should you be involved in an accident. Brain damage and death are not fun, and a helmet may protect you when you most need it! 2. Don't Underestimate the Power of Good Gloves Think about it: the first thing you do when you're falling is what? You put your hands out. It's instinct that goes back millions of years, and when you're falling, all you're going to have is instinct. Wearing a good pair of biker gloves will keep your hands protected from the concrete; if papercuts render your entire hand disabled, imagine what a giant flesh will do to you? 3. Be Visible Motorcycles are way more likely to be involved in an accident than any other vehicle. This is because motorcycles are streamline and people can't always see them. Be sure to wear reflective gear and that your headlights and blinkers are all bright. LED lights should do the trick. When it comes to your safety, it's always better to have something and not need it than not have it and need it. The same can be said about a quality motorcycle insurance (and the fact that it's against the law to not carry an insurance policy for your motor vehicle). Be sure that your policy offers all that it can to meet your needs. Contact CV Mason Insurance Agency in Bristol, Connecticut.
