Driving in the summer sun is something we, as Americans, enjoy. Road trips and more bring plenty of opportunities to get out on the summer roads. But before you head off, it’s critical that you enjoy the safety of your vehicle and passengers. The warm temperatures present unique risks to be aware of. Here are some tips to beat the summer heat when you’re driving.
Get prepared:
- Check your cooling system (or have a professional do it). You should have enough coolant in the tank. If you haven’t had the system checked in a while, consider having your system flushed and refilled.
- Inspect your tires. If the tread is looking worn out, consider getting a new set of tires.
- Top up your tires to the correct psi.
- Test your air conditioning. You don’t want your A/C to fail during a warm-weather drive, so have a mechanic take a look if it’s not operating at full-blast.
- Stock up your emergency supply kit with water, non-perishable food, flashlight, a first aid kit, and any other essential supplies.
On the road:
- Remember that it gets hot inside. It only takes a few minutes for the inside of a vehicle to become like a furnace – even when it’s in the shade. Never leave children or pets inside the parked car when it is warm outside.
- The back seats typically get warmer than the front seats. Ensure passengers, pets, and children get fresh air when they are in the back.
- Keep your gas tank full or close to it. Hot weather can sometimes bring power outages, which could prevent you from filling up when you really need it.
If your car overheats, pull over immediately and turn off the engine. Avoid opening the radiator cap as this will be incredibly hot to touch. You can add coolant or water when the car has cooled down. If you see steam coming from the hood, don’t risk it – call a tow truck.
